5 Essential #MTYRETREAT Takeaways You Need to Know Now

Pen to paper. That’s how it’s been for me and many of my retreat sisters for the last 48 hours since we returned from the #MTYRETREAT which was held at the beautiful 5 star/4 diamond resort Nizuc in Cancun, Mexico.  This was a gathering of women who had different backgrounds but one common interest – we believe in the power of exposure to new experiences and new people.  With this kind of shared perspective, you could literally feel the energy around us wherever we went on the resort.

Throughout the weekend, emotions ebbed and flowed like the tide, and had us all laughing and crying, finally able to express our desires and challenges in a room full of women who UNDERSTAND.  This was the secret key that really bound us together…we understand, and in some cases overstand what it’s like to be a woman of color who is successful in scenarios that – as a result, cause us to feel like we are alone sometimes.

This opportunity to really connect is essential to any woman who has dedicated herself to excellence. Why? Because “iron sharpens iron.” Being brought together in this sisterhood exposed a strength in unity that we each returned home assured of. We relaxed, danced, dined and most of all – collaborated on business trends, strategy and implementation – at this exclusive retreat designed by a modern-day visionary, Myleik Teele.  Myleik prepped us in advance, letting us know that the #mytaughtyou retreat would be excellence on an entirely new level.  Out of over 1,500 applications, Myleik chose close to 100 women for an inaugural experience, and I feel completely blessed and humbled to be one of those women.

I scoured my notes to pull out the very best takeaways for you to enjoy, and apply to your life:

#MTYRETREAT Takeaway #1: There’s a formula for deciding where to FOCUS your energy.

They say that the best is saved for last.  In our case, our farewell dinner and fireside chat the last night of the retreat definitely ranks as one of those moments!  At our beautifully appointed dinner, we enjoyed a front-row seat to a hilariously informative conversation between Myleik and Luvvie of Awesomely Luvvie.  Luvvie dropped gems left and right, including exactly how she determines where to focus her energy.

It’s possible for you to become overwhelmed with life, even when good things are coming your way faster than you can gather them. If you’re like me, you probably had a praying grandmother who told you to take these kind of days “one day at a time.” Even still, go ahead and add Luvvie’s advice as well:

Formula for determining if an opportunity is worth the energy:

  1. Does it sound like something I would enjoy?
  2. Does it pay my fee?
  3. Is this something new and different that I haven’t done before?
  4. Does it elevate my profile?
  5. Does it expose me to a larger audience?

If you can’t answer “YES” to three or more of these questions, then the opportunity is a no-go. Just this one takeaway has the power to alter how you make decisions, conserve your energy and focus.  Takeaway #2 emphasizes this even more…

#MTYRETREAT Takeaway #2: Trade the good for the GREAT, and WRITE your vision.

Many of us can do many things at once and do them WELL. As women, we’re natural multi-taskers who can handle making complex business decisions while cooking the perfect toddler dinner.  But if you’re a woman who has found herself overwhelmed, tired and pulled in 1,000 directions because you have a lot of good businesses you’re trying to run at once, then this takeaway is for you.

Just. STOP. IT. You are a limited resource, and by doing everything, you aren’t trading the good for the great.  You’re just maintaining the good. Take a moment and think about what business endeavors deserve your energy, and cut all the others.

The way to do that is by writing a vision statement, according to Luvvie. This suggestion resonated with me (actually, I almost fell out of my seat when she said it) because the power of this one idea is fully supported in the Word:

Then the LORD replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.” Habakkuk 2:2

…not only that, but I’ve seen it work for so many women because it’s one of the most popular courses offered through BeautifulWildFree.  For the past 6 years, the BeautifulWildFree Manifestation Masterclass has helped students write powerful Manifestation Letters and see their heart’s desires actually happen. Once a student reviews their Manifestation Masterclass gift box, they attend three sessions where we carefully craft a holistic letter that encompasses every area of your life.  Luvvie is so right in that the results of doing this process can be powerful!  She shared that she wrote that she would be a NY Times Bestselling author, that her non-profit would go global and that she would have a tech website that would inform people all over the world…and get this y’all –  her vision statement actually came true.

I also have to mention that trading the good for the great is also about stepping fully into your greatness when you know your current opportunity limits you, no matter what others say. This was the message from Karleen Roy of The Vanity Group’s masterclass. Prepare the way for greatness!

#MTYRETREAT Takeaway #3: You have a CHOICE. Period.

Can I get one time for throwing the victim mentality out of the window?! If you’re building a life that you want to actually represent the dreams that you’ve been having, you’ve got to know that you have a choice. The way you think about your life changes the life you’re living. Khalana Barfield, InStyle Editor, shared that she KNEW she was destined for the Editor role when she was an assistant. Her thoughts shaped her life.

The Word actually says to “be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.” (Proverbs 4:23) To create a new, powerful reality, you’ve got to exercise your mind daily, challenging it by creating new thoughts that stretch beyond what you may think isn’t possible.  You have to CHOOSE this and practice it until it becomes second nature. Your future is depending on the thoughts you’re choosing to think right now.

#MTYRETREAT Takeaway #4: Every brand needs a STRATEGY.

You’ve developed your product.  It’s the best product in the world. Nobody knows about your product (yet). So, a key takeaway from the retreat from Jenn Ekeleme, Brand Strategist and Consultant, was that you must have a strategy that entails market research, a clear, concise benefits statement and an strategy architecture that supports the development of your brand.

My work in Executive leadership positions in Marketing has led me to lead marketing teams around the country, and through that experience, one of the key strategies I always implement with my team is Persona Development and Editorial Calendar Mapping.  Persona Development answers these questions:

  1. What is the gender and age-range of your target market?
  2. What different sub-markets exist in this market?(these are your Personas)
  3. For each persona, what are their challenges? What are their objections to your product or service? What of your offerings are they most likely to purchase?

Answering these questions gives you a more detailed “deep-dive” into the minds of your potential consumers, and allows you to craft your marketing messages to appeal to each one of them, instead of using a broad-stroke approach and speaking to them all the same way, from a surface-level perspective.

My team knows that Editorial Calendar Mapping is a BEAST.  But we still do the exercise annually so that the entire year flows easily. Once you know your Personas, use a template to draft the content, campaigns and promotions that you will offer around each product, for each Persona, for each month.  This spreadsheet will be very detailed, but will also serve as a guideline to your team, so that your brand shows up with consistency.

#MTYRETREAT Takeaway #5: It’s not about your product as much as it is about your STORY.

Zim Ugochukwu of Travel Noire presented a Masterclass on “Using Your Ethos to Craft Your Journey” and in this presentation, she made a riveting statement that any brand-builder needs to apply now.  She said, “It’s not so much about your product as it is about your story.” This one statement is the key to why anyone would purchase from you time after time.

It’s the reason why 100 women submitted deposits to Myleik without knowing ALL the details – we trust her because we understand, relate to and believe her story. Create a way to tell your story so that it is so powerful, so memorable, so compelling, that people just want to be a part of whatever you do.

Study brands who are good story tellers (Beats by Dre, Burt’s Bees) and start working on making your story come to life.

All in all, I absolutely cannot wait for the 2019 #MTYRETREAT! If you know this is the event for you, trust and believe that there will be three times as many applicants for the #MTYRETREAT 2019, which Myleik and her fabulous team are already planning for.

So, submit your information here on her site and you’ll be kept up-to-date on the application process.  In the meantime, reflect on these nuggets, and they’ll be like pure gold deposits in the bank account that’s called YOUR LIFE.
