Loving yourself

Good morning Beautiful!  Loving yourself and developing a love relationship with God come before loving someone else.  It’s easy to see how, if your only focus is loving someone else, and you aren’t caring for the primary relationships in your life – your relationship with you and your relationship with God – that you will easily reach a point of exhaustion or overwhelm.  When you give and give without these important deposits into your life, you’re literally left with nothing.

It’s important to develop the practice of loving yourself – also called “self-care.”  Self-care is defined as the process of setting aside time to habitually devote to areas of your life that feed your spirit, your soul (your mind, will and emotions), and your body.  Think about it.  How many people can you take care of and love when you are emotionally unhealthy and depressed?  Or when you’re constantly sick?  Or when your mind is constantly worrying?  You can try, but you really won’t be doing your best – and you also wouldn’t really be loving others the way that God intended.

To incorporate self-care in your life, you’re going to have to step away from people and spend time with yourself.  You may need to strengthen your spiritual practice of prayer and devotion by getting up a little earlier in the day, you might have to start working out a few times a week on your lunch break, or you may need to find a counselor at your church who you can meet with to talk through some of your emotional pain from the past and begin the process of healing.

Today, identify ONE way you can love yourself a little better, and make the decision to take action.  You’ll begin to fall in love with yourself all over again…and you’ll attract a healthier love from others as well.

Foundational Scripture for Today:  “This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'” Matthew 22:38-39
