Love yourself the way God loves you

Good morning Beautiful! This week we’re discussing perspective. What’s your perspective on your relationships? Are they healthy or do some need healing?

As we meditate on this question this morning, we do so because the relationships we have in our lives are the closest mirror of who we are being in this world. In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus lays out the structure for healthy relationships and how to love yourself. He says that the first and greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all of your heart. He goes on to say that we should love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

At first glance, this scripture seems to instruct us to love God, then to love our neighbors. Actually, it says to love God, then love ourselves, then to love our neighbors. It’s impossible to do a good job loving your neighbor as yourself if you don’t first do a good job loving yourself.

What is self-love in a Christian context? It’s not encouraging you to be selfish or self-absorbed. It’s encouraging you to love yourself the way God loves you- with wisdom, kindness, and consideration. Have you ever wondered about all of those aggravating, rude, inconsiderate relationships you had? How well were you loving yourself during that time? Would you distance yourself from hurtful damaging thoughts about yourself? Did you care for your mind by relaxing it in morning meditation? Did you purposefully enjoy the reflection looking back at you in the mirror? This is self-love.
Today, maximize your relationships with others by loving God and loving yourself.

Foundational scripture for today: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39
